Early Learning Initiative at Gadsden Mission Overview
Teaching Mission
The faculty in The University of Alabama’s College of Education may utilize The Early Learning Initiative at Gadsden as a teaching laboratory for students enrolled in departmental courses. The University of Alabama’s College of Education (COE) may utilize observation booths to view children in developmentally appropriate environments for COE students and for early educators in the state, region, or nation. Knowledge gained in these naturalistic observations is essential for understanding child development and individual differences among children. In addition, teaching faculty serve as professional models for students by being involved in professional development, participating in professional organizations, attending local, regional and national meetings, and staying abreast of current literature in the area of Child Development and Early Childhood Education. The College of Education students focus on understanding children’s growth and development in all areas, developing appropriate experiences and environments that enhance children's development, and participating in facilitating parental involvement and professional interactions.
Research Mission
The research focus of Early Learning Initiative at Gadsden is to increase the scientific body of knowledge about children and their families. Research is a critical component of our mission. Research in this field contributes to the body of knowledge describing how children grow and develop, and it also provides valuable information for the development of effective preschool educational programs. All research is carefully reviewed by The University of Alabama’s Institutional Research Board. Research projects may involve interviewing, observing, videotaping families or children, or asking family members or teachers to complete questionnaires. Taking part in research is a special opportunity for parents. Faculty members and graduate research assistants may be asking for your permission for you or your child to participate in research projects. Research data is handled in a confidential and ethical manner that protects the identity of participants. Families will be notified prior to the beginning of each research project with a description of the specific research goals, and an additional consent form. Efforts are consistent and on-going to ensure that quality research occurs in the Gadsden Early Learning Initiative, to protect the rights of all parties who may be directly and/or indirectly involved in research projects, and to balance research time with daily activities in the children’s program. Any questions or concerns parents might have about a research program should be discussed with the Site facilitator.
Service and Outreach Mission
Service and outreach represent The University of Alabama’s commitment to extend its influence externally to benefit the public and to provide services that address the needs of families. The faculty of the College of Education offer expertise in child development and aid in problem solving and leadership needs in the local, state, and national arenas. Faculty in the department provide in-service training to local and regional groups and help in the development of continuing education opportunities locally and through distance learning. Partnerships and collaboration with other public or private educational systems (Birth-3rd Grade), junior and community colleges, or other 4-year institutions are encouraged in order to facilitate research projects that will benefit the state or region and demonstrate the effectiveness of emerging changes in the transmission of knowledge and skills that will benefit the public.
